Where do we get this tradition that taking communion is renewing the covenant between God and ourselves?
I find no scriptural basis for it.
The prayers are for blessing and sanctitification of the bread and wine to the souls that partake of it. It is to do it in rememberance of Jesus' sacrifice of His body and blood. It is a witness that we do always remember Him. It is that we may have His Spirit to be with us. It is that we are willing to take His name upon us. It is that we are willing to keep His commandments.
But I see no place where the covenant has stopped and needs to be renewed.
If you look at the covenant like a health and life insurance contract....Is it broken and you need a new one if you get sick? Do you need a new one if you die?
If we had to renew every time we sinned, we would do it more often than once a month. What if you sinned and "needed to renew your covenant" in the middle of the month?....and you died.....are you going to hell?
So, when do we need to do a renew covenant? Perhaps when we as a people have to completely start fresh and God says to us be baptised and receive the Holy Spirit. Like in the BOM where Nephi and the leaders had been baptizing before Jesus came....and then they ALL got baptized AGAIN when He arrived.
But it seems to me the only time we would renew, is when God says we need to.
