They determined to invite their neighbors to combine efforts and assist in creating a Ladies' Society. Kimball asked Eliza R. Snow to write a constitution and by-laws for the organization for submission to Latter Day Saint Church President Joseph Smith for review. After reviewing the documents, Smith called them "the best he had ever seen" but said, "this is not what you want. Tell the sisters their offering is accepted of the Lord , and He has something better for them than a written constitution. ... I will organize the sisters under the priesthood after a pattern of the priesthood."
Two weeks after he organized the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo, Illinois, Joseph Smith told them on March 301842 that “the Society should move according to the ancient Priesthood” and that he was “going to make of this Society a kingdom of priests as in Enoch's day—as in Paul's day.”
The Spirit seems to have been impressing upon me often, as of late, about the nature of the ministry of the husband and wife missionary team in the New Testiment, Priscilla and Aquila.
These verses are amazing in regards to the implication of this being a man and woman, doing ministry together, and that they both end up teaching another man... a disciple of John's, more perfectly.[Acts 18:24] And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus.[Acts 18:25] This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.[Acts 18:26] And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue; whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.
I have had a few revelations regarding this as I pondered and prayed about these two over the past two weeks.
Seemed like every time I turned around, the Lord was pointing out something about these two ... and the implications for the Church, and His Kingdom.
But, I complained to others ... there is only this one mention of them, how can God be talking so much about two people that are barely mentioned once in all the New Testament. This morning, as I was preparing to post something on this subject, I looked them up in the Scripture program to make sure I spelled their names right and discovered the following verses.
[Romans 16:3] Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus;[Romans 16:4] Who have for my life laid down their own necks; unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.
[2 Timothy 4:19] Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.
[1 Corinthians 16:19] The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.
These two are mentioned three different times in the letters of Paul. One of those mentions how they have willingly laid their lives down, or put their lives in jeopardy for the sake of Christ, and His Church. Obviously, they were a well know and respect ministry team in Paul's day. I'll leave these toughts with you, and say nothing else about these two at this point. I think it is important for others to get a witness about the spiritual implications for us when considering Aquila and Priscilla.
Back the Relief Society - I wanted to share three more things.
On 28 April 1842 the prophet returned to this subject. He told [366] the women that “the keys of the kingdom are about to be given to them that they may be able to detect everything false, as well as to the Elders.” Then Joseph Smith said, “I now turn the key to you in the name of God, and this society shall rejoice, and knowledge and intelligence shall flow down from this time …”See D&C for the ordination of Emma. Because she had already been ordained for her purpose and calling, she was not ordained again when she took up the mantle of president of the the relief society, however, her two counselors were ordained. This is not an ordination to priesthood, but it was an ordination. Should we rethink the defination of "ordain"?
When Joseph Smith organized the Nauvoo Relief Society on 17 March 1842, he gave women an autonomy currently unknown in the church. There is ample evidence that Joseph envisioned the Relief Society as an organization for women parallel to priesthood hierarchy for men. He instructed sisters to elect their own president who would then select her counselors. Then he “would ordain them to preside over the society … just as the Presidency preside over the church … If any officers are wanted to carry out the designs of the Institution, let them be appointed and act apart, as Deacons, Teachers &c., are among us.”
On the third meeting of the relief society Newell K. Whitney accompanied Joseph Smith and told the Relief Society women: “In the beginning, God created man, male and female, and bestow'd upon man certain blessings peculiar to a man of God, of which woman partook, so that without the female all things cannot be restor'd to the earth—it takes all to restore the Priesthood.”
On 28 April 1842 Joseph told the women: “I now turn the key to you in the name of God and this Society shall rejoice and knowledge and intelligence shall flow down from this time.”
It is clear that at its inception the Relief Society was not considered an “auxiliary” in the church as the Primary for children, Sunday School, and Mutual Improvement Association for adolescents would later be. Joseph had stated: "I now turn the key to you in the name of God" He gave them keys...authority.... these words were recorded in Joseph's own journals and in the meeting minutes, but the wording change later in church history to Joseph turning the key "in their behalf" which means he is holding the keys for them. This change can be traced to George A. Smith who in 1851 was assigned to complete Joseph Smith's history. In working on the manuscript from 1 April 1840 to 1 March 1842, he revised and corrected the already compiled history.
Just some things to think on, study, and pray about hereBy the time the Relief Society was organized, women had already exercised such spiritual gifts as speaking in tongues and blessing the sick. After the close of the fourth meeting, 19 April 1842, Emma Smith, Sarah Cleveland, and Elizabeth Whitney administered to a Sister Durfee. The following week, she testified that she had “been healed and thought the sisters had more faith than the brethren.” After that meeting, Sarah and Elizabeth blessed another Relief Society member, Abigail Leonard, “for the restoration of health.”
In the next meeting Joseph Smith specifically addressed the propriety of women giving blessings: “If God gave his sanction by healing … there could be no more sin in any female laying hands [27] on the sick than in wetting the face with water.” There were women ordained to heal the sick and it was their privilege to do so. “If the sisters should have faith to heal the sick,” he said, “let all hold their tongues.
... and finally, I leave you with the following.
[Mark 16:15] He that believeth and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that believeth not, shall be damned.
[Mark 16:16] And these signs shall follow them that believe;
[Mark 16:17] In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
[Mark 16:18] They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them;
[Mark 16:19] They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.
