Your question is precisely what that article I linked to appears to be answering. It seemed pretty well thought out to me, and very reasonable. Although it is a "tiny bit" long, and you have to wade through a few (perhaps) less relevant, but related facts, if you read carefully, it will eventually render a pretty good answer. At least, I believe I understood what he was saying, and why it seemed plausible. I don't know that he is a scholar, but he is pretty thorough in his research. I had to admire him for going the distance to really understand the ancient Jewish world.
